Dark Eldar - First game back for a while.

Morning all.

Thought I'd chuck a quick one out this morning, since I forgot yesterday, after my game on Monday night.

There's a team tournament coming up that I'm unsure whether I'll be needed to play in so I whipped up a 1600pt Dark Eldar list for it, since I've been using them pretty exclusively since 6th came out.

I tried to add in some of the stuff I've painted this month like my Razorwing and 3rd Raider as well as less focus on the Wych units and more on Kabalites and shooting.

So here's the list I took:

HQ:
  • Archon - huskblade; splinter pistol; Kabalite armour; plasma grenades; combat drugs; soul-trap; shadow field.
  • Haemonculus - venom blade; splinter pistol; shattershard.

Elites:
  • 4 Incubi - Klaivex w/ Demi-Klaives. Raider w/ Disintegrator Cannon, Night Shields and Aethersails.
  • 3 Trueborn - 2 Dark Lances. Venom w/ 2nd Splinter Cannon and Night Shields.
Troops:
  • 10 Kabalite Warriors - Splinter Cannon, Blaster, Sybarite w/ Venom Blade. Raider w/ Dark Lance, Splinter Racks, Aethersails and Night Shields.
  • 10 Kabalite Warriors - Splinter Cannon, Blaster, Sybarite w/ Venom Blade. Raider w/ Dark Lance, Splinter Racks, Aethersails and Night Shields.
  • 4 Wracks - Venom w/ 2nd Splinter Cannon and Night Shields.
Fast Attack:
  • 6 Scourges - 2 Haywire Blasters, Solarite w/ Venom Blade

Heavy Support:
  • Ravager - 3 Dark Lances, Night Shields
  • Razorwing Jet Fighter - 2 Wing Dark Lances, Splinter Cannon, 4 Monoscythe Missiles, Night Shields
It's a list I enjoyed the look of, had a lot of shooting in there as well as a nice little combat unit with the Incubi. Normally I take them in a unit of 9 with the Archon but I wanted some extra units or upgrades.

The game we played was Kill Points in the diagonal deployment (forget it's name) and I had to set up on the defensive to try and stop my paper planes getting popped too easily. We managed 3(ish) turns before calling time and I lost 10 - 6 on points. My warlord was killed and the Marines / Eldar took Linebreaker, I got first blood and the rest was units destroyed.

Night Shields
Not sure how everyone feels about them, but personally I love them. For the first 2 turns it meant Whirlwinds couldn't reach most of my stuff thanks to the diagonal deployment. As most of my blokes were in transports, it kept them safe. As soon as the transports were gone, the Whirlinds were a menace.

Razorwing
I need to investigate the missiles properly as when I built my list, I kept the default missiles. However, I felt this did pretty well popping up in Turn 2 (with some help) and managed to wipe out a Terminator squad on it's own due to weight of fire and Lances being AP2. Think this will stay in my list from now on.

Kill Points
Kill points are hard for me as Dark Eldar and as a player. I prefer the objective based games and find I play better in them, Kill Points missions I tend to get sidetracked and can't finish off units or lose them too easily by playing too risky.

Shattershard
This is one of my favourite upgrades and I always give it my Haemonculus and since it annoys everyone, I'm going to keep a tally going at the side of the blog for how many kills it gets through this year. The total currently stands at 2 Warp Spiders.

Not so Defensive
I didn't utilise one of the Dark Eldar's biggest strengths, their speed, because I was too busy worrying about hiding my paper planes for a few turns and ended up stuck in my own deployment zone. This meant the Marines and Eldar coming in were getting Linebreaker pretty easily, and worse, I didn't get it myself.

Trueborn
Last one, the jury is out on these guys. They were taken as an excuse to get another Venom in on the cheap and I gave them the Dark Lances as I had the models. I was hoping I can use them as a mini Devastator squad, but they didn't really do much in the game and I think they're a bit of an easy target for first blood.

So that's all for now. Thought I'd put my list up and see what people thought and also some stuff from my head about what units did nicely on Monday night.

Cheers,
SB

January Painting Pledge - Raider and Razorwing Completed!

Morning all,

After having a pretty lazy January aside from my Hellions, I managed to get in a furious few days of painting and hobbying.

Razorwing
First up, on Thursday night I decided I wanted to kick myself into gear and get as much as I could of the remaining January list completed. As well as that, I'd been itching to paint my Dark Eldar flyer for ages and always left it as a "just get this other unit done first..." carrot on a stick.

The Razorwing is a really nice model to paint, it's thin and sleek with a few very large plates. I enjoyed painting it up, especially good to ease me back in after a chunk of infantry.

Either way, I managed to plough through that in an evening whilst watching some films, so now it's ready to go on the tabletop!

Spraying Dark Vengeance
On Saturday afternoon, despite the heavy snow we had in Manchester the night before, I managed to clear a path in the garden, put some bin bags down to protect my gear and table and get some spraying done.

One of my aims this month was to get Dark Vengeance sprayed up, which I managed to juuuuust have enough black spray to do it.

Note to self, don't spend an hour outside in the snow spraying plastic men in future. My hands were raw afterwards. But bright side is, they're sprayed up and ready to go next month!

Raider
Ploughing on from the progress with the Razorwing and having a free night on Saturday, I went and got my final Raider to paint up.

Again, I made really good time on this, even though I had to stop after every step to compare with my older Raiders and make sure I got the colour areas correct. When I bought this one, the Dark Lance end was snapped off, so I had to convert it into a Disintegrator, so the plan is for this to be the Incubi wagon.

So with that Raider complete, that's my Dark Eldar army completely painted (until I buy more stuff on a whim) and also my January painting pledge completed!

To Spray:
- Dark Vengeance

To Paint:
- 10 Hellions
- 1 Raider
- 1 Razorwing

Over the next couple of days I'm hoping to make a start on February's pledge or maybe get some miscellaneous tasks out of the way that have been lingering for a while. Expect some updates soon!

Cheers,

January Painting Pledge - Hellions Completed!

Brief update on my January painting pledge, now with 1 week left to run.

Over the weekend I tried to kick myself into gear and get the Hellions completed, rather than leave them and let them over-run into next month AGAIN.

Terrible picture taken in a rush... sorry!

Apologies for the terrible picture, but I can assure you, the painting is even worse than the picture. It's kinda made me regret my quick batch-painting approach, but at the end of the day I've got too much plastic crack lying around and not enough time to paint as well as I used to.

Either way, they're done. So chalk 'em off that list!

To Spray:
- Dark Vengeance

To Paint:
- 10 Hellions
- 1 Raider
- 1 Razorwing

I'm hoping to get an hour free where it's not raining or deciding to snow, so I can get Dark Vengeance sprayed up and worked on.

And in the mean time, I've got the Razorwing on my paint desk ready to be started, I just have absolutely zero motivation.

As for the Raider, I highly doubt that'll be this month. It'll probably slip into my February plans... But who knows, maybe I'll go on a painting bender this weekend?

New Year: Old Failures and New Goals

Morning folks,

Been a while without a post as everyone's been busy over the holidays with work, family, general socialising away from a keyboard, etc. So happy new year to everyone, and hope you all had a good festive period.

Now it's back to work time, which means a new set of goals for this coming year, as well as a recap of what I got done over December.

Dark Eldar:
Out of my Dark Eldar backlog I got all the Kabalite Warriors and Wyches completed and the Hellions ready for painting, although by that point in December I'd got painting fatigue and gave up in favour of Xbox gaming.

I didn't manage to get much else done, apart from getting Dark Vengeance bits out of the box ready to sand the bases and spray... So all in all, apart from that hefty chunk of Dark Eldar, I didn't get much else in the painting pledge dented.

Festive Gaming:
As a send off for the last game before Christmas, some of us playing in a 4 player kill team game involving a crashed shuttle and it's pilot S.Claus. So I spent a Sunday evening converting, undercoating and painting him ready for the game on a Monday night and thought he looked cool.

As for the actual game, alliances went out of the window pretty much straight away, and the Ultramarines kill team used it's Random Target Generator (tm) to full effect meaning no one was safe.

Tyranids:
I decided with it being a new year and not really being too interested in the Dark Angels stuff, that I'd start myself a new army project and try to add at least 1 new unit a month. Hopefully reaching 2,000pts of painted stuff by the end of July in the hopes of going to Britcon 2013 in August.

The options were Tau, add to the Chaos stuff I had from Dark Vengeance or an army I'd been after starting for ages - Nids.

I decided on Nids as they were my original first army (after splitting Battle for Macragge) and I wanted to do the paint scheme I did on them with brown and bone, and mostly because it didn't involve vehicles, just big beasties.

So with my Xmas pennies I went out and bought the Battleforce and Codex as a launch point, and hopefully place an order for January's unit in the next few days.

I'm not entirely sure how I want the Nid army to be, probably just a collection of all the different units I can get hold of. Initially I wanted the core of the army to be Warriors, but it's pretty expensive to be running that, even with eBay prices.

That's all for now folks while my work PC churns into life after a month with no activity! I'll get a painting pledge for January sorted in the next couple of days too.

December Painting Pledge - Eldar, Dark Eldar and Massive Optimism!

Morning folks,

This one's a bit late from me, partly because I forgot and partly because it's been quite hard to gauge my limits for the coming month. After today, I'm off work for a while and this time last year, I probably could have blitzed through my entire backlog as I would have been at home on my own for 8+ hours a day.

Now the reality is a bit different, but what I'm hoping is that whilst I'm in during the day it'll get rid of odd jobs, errands and housework that pile up until evening time and cut into my possible painting time. So, it's been really hard to gauge how much exactly I will or won't get done this month.

Anyways, enough of the life story. I'm aiming high for this month's push! Onto the lists!

Spray:
- Dark Vengeance Contents
First up, I've had Dark Vengeance bought and built since it was released wanting the Chaos bits as allies for my Chaos Daemons and also to bulk out my Dark Angels. I love the Plasma tactical squad and it's only as I'm writing this that I really want to get another one.

These guys were built pretty quick but have been sat in a box ever since. With more daytime to play with whilst I'm off I can hopefully get these sprayed up ready for the new year!

Fix:
- De-magnetise Eldar Jetbikes.
I used these for the first time on Monday night and all my fears for them came true. The magnets I used were too small / not strong enough and I spent most of the time using them just trying to attach the model back to the flying stand magnet or fixing magnets back in as I went.

I think I'm going to try and remove the magnets off them, make the skimmer hole slightly wider and put the main stem into there and glue in place. Having to faff about sticking models back together during a game is something I really, really hate.

Also as I was putting stuff away, I dropped my Jetbike Farseer on the floor, so he needs repairing ASAP.

Paint:
- 1 Razorwing
- 1 Raider
- 10 Wyches
- 15 Kabalite Warriors
- 10 Hellions

Very optimistic with this lot. My logic is that it's freezing outside, so I'll be in the house of an evening more watching tele and getting some painting time in.

My logic is that this can be done in 3 batches. The first being the Razorwing and the Raider, they're very similar in that they're both vehicles and consist of 90% metal and flat panel work. I'm hoping I could knock these out in a week or weekend if I'm very lucky.

The second batch will be the 10 Wyches and 15 Warriors. 25 infantry is a fair chunk to aim for, but I'm allowing myself 2 weeks for this lot. They're similar in size and colours so it won't hopfully be too much of a stretch.

The last batch is the Hellions who I'm guessing are going to be quite awkward so whatever time is left after the first 2 can get spent on these.

By time these are done it should give me some new units to play with and try out the rules for in 6th edition - Flyers specifically.

WARNING!: We're leaving the valley of optimism and heading for Dreamland with the rest of this stuff.

The "Maybe" Fix Pile:
- Fix Ork flyers to have correct weapons
- Fix Ork flyers to attach to bases.
Few years ago I made 2 Ork flyers for Apocalypse games out of some WW2 planes from Hobbycraft. With the rules for Dakkajets allowing me to finally field something I like in the Ork Fast Attack slot, I figure now would be a good time to convert them to proper weaponry.

The other issue with them is that they aren't attached to the flying bases properly. They used to be super-glued on, but as you can imagine... it's a nightmare to transport them like that. So along with converting the appropriate weapons, I need to find a reliable way to get them attached to the bases and take them off it at the end of each game.

Either that, or spend £45 on two new plastic planes from GW...

The "Maybe" Spray Pile:
- 10 Necron Immortals
- 5 Necron Lychguard
- Trazyn
- Imotekh
- 1 Cryptek
- 1 Ghost Ark
- 1 Catacomb Command Barge

This is last year's Christmas haul here. I got a bit excited when the Necron codex got re-done and bought lots of stuff with GW vouchers I got given, built it all and then never touched my Necrons again - mostly due to the amount of them that cropped up and the emphasis everyone had on the flyers. They became the Grey Knights.

Anyway, they're all built and sanded (I think) and hopefully if I can find time and spray, I'll get these done ready for the new year.

The "Maybe" Paint Pile:
- 6 Eldar War Walkers
- 3 Eldar Wave Serpents
- 1 Eldar Falcon
If I thought I was optimistic before... this is taking the mickey a bit. Last weekend I sprayed my 6 War Walkers, 3 Wave Serpents and 1 Falcon for my Eldar army that's now nearly a year old.

I'm hoping that since they're Ulthwe, these might be super quick to paint... but I'm slow when it comes to painting vehicles and at the end of the day, I don't want to do too sloppy a job.

//---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------//

Right, so that's my mega optimistic December list. I'll be lucky if I manage to just get Dark Vengeance sprayed but after Christmas comes I'll probably have loads of people to go visit, and hopefully a few new Xbox games and films to distract me from painting for the forseeable future.

If by some miracle I can get the Dark Eldar and Eldar shifted off the painting pile this year, I'm planning a massive curveball for January's painting pledge.

November Painting Pledge - Final Update

Hullo folks,

I'm aware it's currently December 3rd, but I managed to finish off the remainder of my November painting pledge over the weekend, along with extra stuff painted on top of the original list.

The hardest part of the painting pledge stuff is when I need to spray. I leave work in the morning and it's dark, get home and it's dark, can't spray indoors and no longer have access to a garage to do my spraying. So it means I'm limited to weekends and only then if it's not too busy and baby Badger lets me.

So the original November pledge was as follows...
Paint:
- 1 Farseer
- 1 Autarch on Jetbike
- 5 Jetbikes

Fix:
- Archon trophy racks
- Wyches weapon arms
- Raiders dark lance

Spray:
- 6 Eldar War Walkers
- 3 Wave Serpents
- 1 Falcon
- As much Dark Eldar as I can get out of the rest of the spray can!
And proud to say, everything on that list got done and more! I managed to spray the remaining Eldar bits up after getting a new can of Chaos Black and the weather keeping dry on Saturday. So now I'm trying to decide what to go with for my December pledge (tomorrow's post).

Along with those, I got a bit of evening painting time on Friday and Saturday to chip away at the pile of Dark Eldar I got hold of last month.

Haemonculis with a little box thing... Use him as a Shattershard with a Venom Blade.

Archon with Power Weapon / Venom Blade, Phantasm Grenade Launcher and a Soul Trap.

3 Reaver Jetbikes. One nearest camera has a heat lance underneath.

The Haemonculis was the most awkward thing out of all these to paint. I reckon I could have knocked out the jetbikes and the Archon in a night on their own, but I kept having to go back and touch up details I'd missed on all the others - along with about 20 layers of Cadian fleshtone on the Haemonculis' coat.

So yeah, expect December's pledge tomorrow after I decide what I'll be getting done tonight...

Dark Eldar Thoughts - Archon Wargear

Past few weeks I've been playing Dark Eldar pretty exclusively in 6th edition. At the moment they're the all around package for me, I love painting them, building them and using them on the table as it's always been a fun game when I've used them (even when I've had everything shot down in 2 turns and no way to kill vehicles from then on).

Playing a 650pt game on Monday made me think more about what wargear I give my Archon as I used to stick to the same combo I liked. And I also found myself in posession of another Archon model in my 2nd hand Dark Eldar stuff who I had to decide how to equip if I were to use both in the same list.

Now personally, I really like Archons as my HQ choice, the self-centred lords of Kabals are one of the highlights of the fluff of the Dark Eldar army and I always like to try and include one, rather than a Wych or Arena themed Succubus or Haemonculi coven.

So, to help me think about Wargear and choices, I thought I'd write this post to get me thinking and to discuss with anyone interested.

Venom Blade
Cheap and handy to have. Dark Eldar's low strength is offset thanks to a lovely 5pt spend on top of your normal close combat weapon. The 2+ to wound really scares people and against lots of bodies like Guard, Orks and Nids it can help maximise the damage you do in a combat. It also helps against higher toughness things and Monstrous Creatures too - although they're pretty likely to make their (usually good) saving throws.

Blast Pistol
Handy for an extra bit of shooting against vehicles, especially if the Archon is in with Incubi or another unit that lacks a bit of firepower. Even handy just to try and pick off a Terminator or such on the way into combat. However, 15pts is a bit expensive for me to take one regularly.

Power Weapon
For most people and codexes, a power weapon is pretty much par for the course. In Dark Eldar however I tend to shy away from using them and either go up to an Agoniser or keep it cheap with a Venom Blade. The strength 3 really hurts the power weapon, as does it now becoming AP3. Lots of people still use them, it's just that I'd rather save myself 10pts or spend the extra 5pts.

Blaster
I'd actually never realised an Archon could take a blaster until I re-read the codex the other night and it got me thinking why anyone would ever take one? 99% of people will tool themselves up for close combat with an Archon to take advantage of his high WS, I and A. But we're forgetting that the Archon has BS7 alongside his WS7 meaning hits on a 2+, and a chance again if it misses. I think it's something that's worth considering if you play a shooting heavy Dark Eldar army or want to put him in with Trueborn or Warriors.

Agoniser
One of my favoured close combat weapons, all the benefits of the power weapon but always wounds on a 4+. I would always spend the extra 5pts on top of the power weapon to get the fixed wounding value. I tend to give my squad leaders these, just incase they get stuck in combat with anything tough or a monstrous creature.

Electrocorrosive Whip
Really not keen on this one, especially when compared with the Agoniser. The extra 5pts over the Power Weapon allows you (if you cause an unsaved wound) to make the opponent be half strength for the rest of the combat. 3 times out of 4 an unsaved wound is going to have killed the enemy that you're fighting. I suppose it would be handy against things like power-fist weilding opponents, Monstrous creatures etc. but the downside then is you're using your basic S3. Not one for me personally, but I can see the merits of it.

Huskblade
I do like this weapon, partly because it's AP2 and the other part for it's insta-killingess. Admittedly it's more than double the cost of a power weapon and an extra 15pts on top of the Agoniser but it's just a cool bit of gear. The fact it's AP2 helps when fighting Terminator armoured foes and such, but the downside is you're striking at S3 again. I like to give my expensive Archons this bit of gear just for some fear factor.

Haywire Grenades
Got 5pts spare at the end of your list? Give your Archon some Haywires. It'll help massively incase the unit gets stuck in with a Dread or other walker, when they could be out dealing with  other units. Striking at I7 means most of the time they'll be going first. WS7 means generally hitting most stuff on a 3+ and then likely to take at least 1 hull point off it. It also helps add that extra bit of oomph if you assault a vehicle with a squad too.

Ghostplate Armour
For 10pts this is the token armour upgrade to keep things cheap. Gives your Archon an invulnerable save (albeit a rubbish one) and ensures he'll get a save against small arms fire which is always good in the world of Bolters.

Combat Drugs
I like to take this just for a little boost. There's only 1 particularly useless result (Hypex) for the Archon, since most of the time he'll be in a unit that doesn't have combat drugs itself. Pretty much everything else is cracking for an Archon. +1WS, +1S, Re-roll failed To Wound rolls, +1A or start off with a pain token all mean the Archon gets a nasty boost. It's a gamble since you could pay 10pts and get 3D6 and pick highest for Run moves, but at the same time anything else means your Archon gets even nastier.

Soul-Trap
Nifty bit of wargear but quite limited since it can only be used on Independent Characters and Monstrous Creatures, and there's not always tons of them wandering around. But it can be cool to get the boost off of this up to S6 (or S8 if you rolled well on your combat drugs!) means the Archon then becomes even more of a beast after that.

Djin Blade
I'm not entirely sure why the Djin Blade is part of the "other wargear" bit rather than the "replace pistol / CCW with..." section as it's not an upgrade to an existing weapon, rather a stand alone power weapon. Anyway... it's similar to a Daemon weapon in that it gives bonus attacks but at a risk to the user. 2 extra attacks but if you roll a double on those 2 extra dice it rebels and auto-hits the weilder. Nasty if it comes off for you, but also incredibly nasty if  not as it'll be 2 auto-hits with your own weapon. Not keen on it myself, but for those who like a gamble - go for it!

Clone Field
Reducing enemy damage by D3 is always good against particularly powerful enemies like characters, power fist weilder and monstrous creatures that have a lower number of attacks but are much more dangerous. I've never personally used the Clone Field as I prefer the Shadow Field. I can imagine with the new challenge system in 6th edition, a clone field would be particularly good if you can roll well enough.

Phantasm Grenade Launcher
Really handy this one, although pricey at 20pts. When Dark Eldar are in combat you need to get the most out of their high initiative to do the damage first. They can't normally take a pounding and then hit back quite so well, so the Phantasm comes in handy here, especially if you attach the Archon to a unit like Incubi, who can't normally get grenades.

The other nice thing about the Phantasm is that it also gives the bearer and their unit defensive grenades, but I'm not entirely sure how they work in 6th and I haven't got access to the 6th ed rules. Something to do with Stealth now I think? But still, that's pretty decent either way. Not as good as it was in 5th, but if it saves your units getting shot to death then it's cool.

Shadowfield
Another bit of my favourite wargear, 2+ invulnerable saves are mega annoying for opponents to play against. Only thing I find with my luck is either the Shadowfield never drops and I roll 2+ constantly through the game, or the very first attacks made on him make the field drop. Depends if you're willing to pay the 30pts for this and lose out on option of having a clone field. Me personally, I am more than happy to pay it.

Webway Portal
Another piece I've very rarely used in games as I don't tend to require the Webway. If it was me personally, I'd only give him this if he was very cheap and in a Venom, just to get it down on the table. However, with changes to disembarking you now can't get as far forward and get out which doesn't help this so much. I'd rather leave my Archon to do what he does best (fighting) and let the Haemonculis carry the portal, especially since the person who drops it is going to be out in the open for a turn then or the turn prior.

Example Builds:
That's it for wargear, but I thought I'd go on with some example weapon and wargear combinations for Archons depending on points and role in the list.

Cheap and Basic:
  • Venom Blade
  • Ghostplate
  • Haywire Grenades
  •  - 80pts
This guy can go in a Warrior squad, on his own, trueborn etc. He's pretty much as cheap as you can get him and still be equipped to deal with a few threats. I wouldn't go any lower than this personally because he'll most likely be your Warlord and an easy kill and therefore Slay the Warlord bonus point. He adds a bit of extra oomph rather than a Sybarite or Dracon anyway.

Mid Range Dueller:
  • Agoniser
  • Soultrap
  • Ghostplate
  •  - 100pts
Easy character hunter, don't bother sending him against the likes of Abaddon, Kharn and Draigo but he can happily slap guard commanders, ethereals, battlesuit commanders and such (anything that he can strike first at and doesn't have a power fist) - provided you can catch them of course. This is around the level I normally keep my Archon at, anymore and he's a bit too fragile to hold his points.

Trueborn Support:
  • Venom Blade
  • Blaster
  • Haywire
  •  - 85pts
One off the top of my head here, to try and get the Blaster involved somewhere. Forget about upgrading and equipping a Dracon and have this fella in instead. The Blaster gives you the extra blaster shot in a Trueborn squad and also allows him to precision shot characters and snipe Terminator captains, Wolf guard, etc.

Expensive Combat:
  • Huskblade
  • Soul-Trap
  • Combat Drugs
  • Shadowfield
  • Phantasm Grenade Launcher
  •  - 165pts
This guy is pretty expensive, but he's nasty. This is the level I like my Archon to be in bigger games and the Phantasm is something I've added on top to use in future games to support my Incubi. But yeah, the combat drugs hopefully give him an extra boost to his stats, the shadowfield stops attacks coming in from whatever and the huskblade / soul-trap combo means he can chance to insta-kill people and get the Soul-trap going a bit faster. This is better than he was in 5th thanks to challenges being able to call out ICs in units (or at least kill the sergeants).

Conclusion
So that's it for my Archon post. It's given me a bit to think about for the coming weeks whilst I paint my 2nd Archon and what to take for an 800pt game on Monday night.

Let me know your thoughts on the wargear - what do you use as a DE player? What do you hate to play against as a non-Dark Eldar army?

Cheers!

November Painting Pledge - Update #3

Righto, a quick one here.

Had quite a productive weekend mostly due to a Saturday morning without work and having a free house.

Friday night I repaired all my second hand Dark Eldar stuff and got them ready for spraying if the weather was going to hold. Whilst checking some stuff out though, I found the Archon I had got had lost his trophy rack on the back and part of his helmet was broken. No bother though, I had plenty to repair him with...

Sorry for the absolutely terrible picture...

So I converted this alternate Archon with a power weapon / venom blade (wanting to keep him cheap) and a Phantasm Grenade Launcher. I figure I can attach him to my Incubi as a grenade dispenser for them. I tried to give him the creepiest helmet I could find but it was only once I'd glued this one on that I found the Wych helmet that's just a big visor. I might go back and swap them later on.

Saturday morning I got all that Dark Eldar stuff sprayed, and learnt a few tricks along the way which I'll post tomorrow. Some are obvious stuff most hobbyists would know, but nevertheless if it helps anyone, it'll be worth it.

In total, all this got sprayed:
- Haemonculis
- Archon
- Raider
- 3 Venoms
- 10 Wyches
- 10 Hellions
- 3 Reavers
- 15 Kabalite Warriors
- Razorwing
- Normal Eldar weapon platform weapons (I forgot to paint these when I did Guardians!)

Then, Saturday night I tried to chip away at the mass of black undercoated figures and thought the Venoms would be a good start.

Finished them off last night, along with bases ready to be used from now on - although I'm not sure what I would put in them anymore... These ones have cockpit glass painted because 1. they were glued on and 2. I couldn't be bothered painting the pilots inside.

HURRAH. More Splinter Cannons.
That's my progress for the weekend and thought I did well in November to hit my goals. Only thing I can think that didn't get done was the Eldar stuff sprayed - BUT - I tried to spray the War Walkers and lots of bits fell apart, so they're repaired now and ready to go next weekend.

Painting Pledge - November More Eldar

Ello folks,

Following on from my post yesterday about finishing off October's Eldar (bar a Farseer...) I thought I'd lay out my dream for November's pledge.

November is going to be a busy month at work, so I'm going to scale this one back a bit, although I could REALLY do with getting some Dark Eldar stuff done...

Last Friday night I went to Bury and Bolton Gaming Club to have a wander around, see what the club is like and also meet a lad who I'd spoken to on Facebook who was selling some Dark Eldar.

So, my wallet now much lighter, I've inherited this lot:

- 1 Archon
- 1 Haemonculis
- 1 Raider
- 1 Razorwing
- 3 Reaver Jetbikes
- 10 Hellions
- 15 Warriors
- 10 Wyches.

This has rounded my army off a lot now, given me the extra Raider and Warrior squad I was after and also replaced my Skaven-Haemonculis with the actual model.

There's a few broken bits in there that need replacing, but I was surprised at the painting since it was very similar to mine apart from Boltgun Metalish colour as the basis for vehicle chassis' and armour. Still, I really liked the look of the colour scheme I was originally debating leaving them as is and have them as looking like a 2nd rag tag group of Raiders, but thought it might look a little too disjointed.

So I'm hoping I can get away with fixing up the broken bits, sorting the bases out (some have rivers and grass on) so I can base them in the same way as all my armies and then maybe just get away with going over the armour with black and Ice Blue drybrush... Here's hoping anyway!

Onto the painting pledge!

Paint:
- 1 Farseer
- 1 Autarch on Jetbike
- 5 Jetbikes

Fix:
- Archon trophy racks
- Wyches weapon arms
- Raiders dark lance

Spray:
- 6 Eldar War Walkers
- 3 Wave Serpents
- 1 Falcon
- As much Dark Eldar as I can get out of the rest of the spray can!

So yeah, like I say, bit lighter this month but I'll set myself the goal of the Craftworld Eldar stuff and hopefully make a start on as much of the Dark Eldar as I can.

I'm hoping to play in an inter-club Tournament the first weekend of December, so want to take my Dark Eldar to that, however, work is looking a fair bit iffy for that. So at least if everything is painted up, I can see how things are nearer the time.

Cheers,
SB

Post-Game: Dark Eldar v 6th Ed Chaos Marines

Morning folks,

Last night I brought out my Dark Eldar again to see if their victory against the Tau the other week was a complete fluke - and mostly because it meant I didn't have to write a new list or pack models up.

I played against Angryman's Chaos army to give the new codex a try, so he'd not had too long to put a list together. So... we squared off with the following lists (ish - give or take a few upgrades I can't remember):

Dark Eldar:
- Archon (Shadowfield, Soul Trap, Huskblade) [Warlord: +1 to Charge Rolls]
- Haemonculis (Hex-Rifle, Shattershard)
- 8 Wracks
- 9 Incubi (Klaivex, Onslaught)
- Raider (Dark Lance, Torment Grenade Launcher, Night Shields, Aeither Sails)
- 10 Warriors (Sybarite w/ Agoniser, Splinter Cannon, Blaster)
- Raider (Dark Lance, Torment Grenade Launcher, Night Shields, Aeither Sails)
- 10 Scourges (2 Haywire Blasters, 1 Splinter Cannon, Solarite w/ Venom Blade)
- 3 Beastmasters (1 Agoniser, 10 Khymarae, 1 Clawed Fiend)
- Ravager (3 Dark Lances, Night Shields)

Chaos Space Marines:
- Daemon Prince (Khorne? Winged. Got +1 Strength on his Boon roll before game) [Warlord: Enemies within 12" use lowest LD]
- Daemon Prince (Khorne? Winged. Got +1 BS on his Boon roll before game)
- 15 Chaos Marines (1 Plasma, 1 Melta, Champion, Icon of Wrath?)
- 20 Chaos Marines (1 Plasma, 1 Melta, Champion, Icon of Wrath?
- 5 Chaos Terminators
- Defiler
- Vindicator

We played "Big Guns Never Tire" with 3 objectives and the diagonal deployment and I chose to deploy and go first.

We also rolled so that Night Fighting was present on Turn 1.

Turn 1 - Dark Eldar
So, first turn for the Dark Eldar I tried to get my guns just on 36" to mean I could fire, but any return fire and I'd be getting +2 cover save (meaning 2+ on my very obscured Incubi raider) and combined with Night Shields try and minimise fire back.

I kept my Scourges in reserve to deep strike in, hoping they'd be of some use later and also to minimise the fact there wasn't a lot of cover.

I ploughed the Beastmaster unit forward to behind the big central building, kept the Raiders obscured but moved them and the Ravager up to 35"ish so they could hope for some cheeky lance shots.

I think I managed to wound a flying Daemon Prince but that was about it.

Turn 1 - Chaos Marines
Both the Daemon Princes flew directly towards the Dark Eldar meaning I'd still need 6s to hit the following turn.

The 2 Chaos Marine blob units budged forward (or at least, tried to. They both rolled really low on difficult terrain) as did the Defiler.

The Vindicator attempted to fire at one of the Raiders, but thanks to my lovely, lovely Night Shields, was out of range.

The Defiler then cast it's gaze upon the other Raider with my Incubi unit in. But fortunately for me, I was behind cover and Shrouded so I passed the cover save.

Turn 2 - Dark Eldar
Turn 2 for the Dark Eldar and no sign of the Scourge reinforcements.

I moved the Incubi Raider up it's full distance and flat out to try and head towards the backfield objective.

The 2 Daemon Princes were still up in the air so they took the brunt of fire as they were the closest and biggest threats. But I didn't manage to do much to them at all.

I chipped a Hull Point off the Defiler using some cheeky lance fire.

Then I assaulted a Chaos Marine unit with my Beastmasters, lost the resulting combat (partly for going at I1 for charging through difficult) and then ran back towards my edge.

Turn 2 - Chaos Marines
Turn 2 for Chaos and the Terminator unit showed up from reserve, ready to deep strike onto the table. Trying to land close to my Wrack unit holding an objective. However, a really unlucky scatter landed them on top of their own Daemon Prince and Angryman rolled a 1 for the Deep Strike mishap. Goodbye Mr Terminators!

The 2 Daemon princes chose to land and go after a Ravager and a Raider (Warriors) each, and the Marine squad that defeated the beastmasters chased down the final Raider (Incubi).

Between shooting and assault, the Ravager was destroyed along with the Warrior's raider meaning they piled out on the other side of some cover to the Daemon Prince - ready to return fire.

The Chaos marines failed to destroy the Incubi raider between all their attacks - although thinking back about it, I'm sure if they could have used Krak grenades rather than going at S4 (albeit with 1 less attack).

Also, the Defiler with it's "It Will Not Die" rule got one of it's lost Hull Points back.

Turn 3 - Dark Eldar
In turn 3, the Scourges showed up and performed a pin point landing just outside the Chaos objective building and the Beastmasters regrouped ready to fight on.

The Incubi hopped out of their Raider ready to face down the Marines outside, as the Raider itself made a "tactical retreat" away from everyon, but still in Lance range.

The Kabalite Warriors hopped into terrain, ready to deal with the Daemon Prince that was on their doorstep and the Wracks shifted themselves about to deal with a fresh-from-Ravager-Killing Daemon Prince.

Shooting time and the Scourges managed, after about 40 shots, to kill 1 lowly Chaos Marine in the building. Pitiful...

The Kabalite Warriors however managed to fare much better and took 3 wounds off the Daemon Prince nearby. Lastly, my Haemonculus failed for the third time in a row to hit with his Hexrifle. Abysmal.

Onwards to assault and the Beastmasters declared a charge on the nearby Chaos Marine squad, took the overwatch fire and then got into charge. The Incubi and Archon decided to leave the hulking Daemon Prince and take some frustration out on the Chaos Marines too - charging in.

The Chaos Marine champion then issued a challenge to the Dark Eldar elite swordsmen and the Archon. The Dark Eldar noble scoffed at the thought of fighting such a lowly opponent and sent the Incubi Klaivex forwards instead.

In the resulting assault, the Dark Eldar lost 2 Khymarae and in return killed about 6 or 7 Chaos Marines, meaning they needed snake eyes to pass. Which they failed and were hacked down by the Incubi.

The Chaos Champion was cut down by the Klaivex combining his Demi-klaives.

Turn 3 - Chaos Marines
In retaliation, the Chaos Marines unleashed a torrent of fire on the Scourges from the Chaos Marine unit in the building and a Vindicator, wipining the Scourges out of existence, with not a single save being passed.

The Defiler then turned it's attention on the Incubi unit and the Daemon Princes prepared to charge their respective targets - a Kabalite warrior unit and the unit of Wracks with Haemonculis.

Assault 1 - Daemon Prince on Kabalite Warriors. I think this was the first and only time my Overwatch has ever done anything, killing the Daemon Prince off thanks to a torrent of Splinter weapon fire.

Assault 2 - The Defiler on the Incubi and Archon. That unit had nothing that could deal with the Defiler for a turn, so I thought to myself "I'll pile the wounds on the Archon, he's got a 2+ invulnerable save, he'll be fine!" and lowe and behold... first dice rolled... a 1. Archon and 2 Incubi insta-killed. The Incubi then chose to fail their morale test, as per "Our Weapons Are Useless!" and flee.

Assault 3 - Daemon Prince on Wracks. This was a mega nulled combat with I don't think either side causing a wound thanks to FNP on the Wracks and the Prince's Armour. However, what it did do, was cause the Wracks to pile in 3" and down a level taking the top 3 of the unit away from the objective.

Then I had to finish the game there due to the time...

Result
Chaos 4
(1 Objective, 1 Heavy Support Killed, 1 Warlord Killed, 1 Linebreaker)

Dark Eldar 2
(1 First Blood, 1 Warlord Killed)

All in all, was a good enjoyable game of 6th ed. I got my first taste of how hard it can be to hit Flyers / Flying Monsters and more practice with my Dark Eldar is always good. I think if I can add a decent anti-flyer solution to the force, I've got a nice enough list for me to stick with.

Stuff I Forgot:

Now, like usual there's some stuff I forgot during the game, either from rustiness or lack of familiarity with 6th ed.

1. Forgot to give my Pain Token to the Incubi and Beastmasters after they killed the Marines. Would have helped some shooting I took in Turn 3, but oh well.

2. It was a bit pointless letting my Archon take the Defiler wounds. If I'd drawn combat, I would have been locked in. I should have accepted the 3 Incubi casualties and then failed my Morale.

3. Beasts, even though they ignore difficult terrain for movement and charging, still are Initiative 1 when they go through it. Meaning they don't get to make use of the Dark Eldar high initiative. This combined with Overwatch meant I lost most of my Khymarae before doing anything.

4. REMEMBER TO PUT THE BLOODY DARK ELDAR FAQ IN MY BAG. For the second week running, I brought the Chaos Daemon FAQ.

Cheers,
SB.

Back in business - Dark Eldar, Necrons, Squats and new Eldar army!

Morning all,

Been a while since I had the time or energy to blog about anything. However, work and personal life has chilled out a bit in the last day or so. Which means here comes a blog about what I've been doing over the last few months.

Brotherhood of the Forge
Last summer I spent some pennies on a fair amount of Dwarf boxsets and bits in order to finalise my Sisters of Battle / Squat army. I posted stuff up about these a while ago: HERE

These guys are all sanded and ready to be sprayed up, along with an Immolator. But again, I've just not had the time to get them done.

Dark Eldar
From the Warboot in November I "rescued" a big horde of Dark Eldar models. I spent most of Xmas holidays high on fumes stripping the paint off of them: HERE

In the mean time, I managed to convert up some more Blasters (splinter rifles with torment grenade launcher bulbs on the end) and tidy up 3 Vypers to use as Venoms.

Necrons
As well as the Dark Eldar stuff, I had a big backlog of Necron stuff that I'd gotten for Xmas that needed to be built and sorted.

10 Immortals with Tesla Carbines, 5 Lychguard with shields, Imotekh the Stormlord, Trazyn the Infinte and a Cryptek.

After I'd done these, I had a Ghost Ark which was one of the most time consuming kits I'd done for a while. As well as a Catacomb Command Barge / Annihalation Barge which very nicely can swap between each if you don't glue stuff. And since I've not been able to paint / play with it yet, it gives me the option to choose which I prefer.

Eldar
Around the end of February, I bought the remnants of an Eldar army off another club member who has stopped playing 40k.

This has kept me busy over the last 2 months, chipping away where I can at building, repairing and converting stuff.

In all, the army consists of:
- Farseer
- 6 War Walkers
- 3 Wave Serpents
- 1 Falcon
- 20 Dire Avengers
- 6 Jetbikes

I've got a few missing bits here and there, which I'm scouring eBay to get hold of. I'm also planning on converting the Jetbikes into Dire Avenger style riders, as opposed to the really old and pants looking Guardians riding them.

The plan is also to convert another Jetbike rider into an Autarch with Power Weapon, so I've got a 2nd HQ choice and to pad out my points a bit more.

I've not done a list yet, so I don't know exactly how many points I have of the Eldar. All I know is that I'm after a unit to ride in the 3rd Wave Serpent. Fire Dragons maybe? Who knows... Eldar is still really new to me and I'm having a "I want everything" moment.

I'm also yet to decide on a colour scheme for the army. Red is a no, no because of my Khorne Daemons. Green is also bad because of Orks and Dark Angels. Blue I'm also not keen on as I want the Dire Avengers to stand out, and also it's too close to my Dark Eldar army.

At the moment, I'm thinking about a Yme-Loc craftworld, but that could be another blog post entirely!

---------------------

So that's me for now. Baby Badger is due any time now, so I'm sure just as I've escaped one thing stopping me from hobbying, I'll have another reason to neglect my plastic crack mountain.

Cheers,
SB

Badger's Log - "Vintage" Dark Eldar Rescue

Afternoon all,

It's been a bit without a blog over the festive period, people have been busy with family, Xmas goodies and various projects. I had a moderately productive hobbying break, mostly just assembling stuff.

What I did do, whilst I had a free house for the day, was strip a load of second hand Dark Eldar that I'd gotten at the last Warboot, in a trade for some old LOTR stuff.

A few of them were in an (what I originally thought) an OK state... whereas others were pretty terrible. So, I chucked the lot - 40 warriors and 6 Wyches - into jugs of acetone free nail polish remover and by the time I checked the next day, the stripper was jet black and all sorts of nastiness floating in it.

It then took me 2 hours of scrubbing with a toothbrush, but what I ended up with, was a tub full of bits. Whoever had the models before must have used some cheap nasty glue which has dissolved away with the paint.

It wasn't until I came to assemble the models a few days later, between the rubbish glue and the thick black paint remover, that I'd lost a few bits along the way. A few arms and weapons weren't a problem to replace, I simply used some of my newer Dark Eldar spares. However, I'd lost the body of one of them... so I was down to 39 Kabalite Warriors!

Along the way, I originally thought I had 4 squads of 10, each with a Splinter Cannon. Turns out, I had about 6 or 7 Splinter cannons spread through the units... so what I decided to do then was change the squad layouts a bit... So I've ended up with:

3 x 10 Kabalite Warriors - Sybarite with a Splinter Pistol and CCW (or Venom Blade), Blaster, Splinter Cannon
8 or 9 Trueborn - Variety of different armaments... I've got some with Splinter Cannons, some with Blasters, some with Shardcarbines and a Dracon with a Blast Pistol and Power Weapon.

The plan with the Trueborn is to be able to run a few squads of them (to allow me to use all the Splinter Cannons), but for some to have a variety of uses. So maybe a 3 man squad with a Blast Pistol Dracon and 2 Splinter Cannons, a 4 man squad with 2 Cannons and 2 Shardcarbines, a 4 Blaster unit, etc. With the smaller units, I can then chuck them in Venoms.

Or keep them as 1 squad, have them led by Duke Sliscus in a Raider. Which would be nice and fun...

Finally, whilst re-assembling these guys I came across 1 fella that had a broken Splinter Rifle, snapped half way down the barrel. So rather than chuck him away, I thought I would give him an experimental Blaster conversion using some bits from my bitz box.

So there he is with his converted Blaster. I think the "Bulby" look gets the point across that it's a blaster, and it'll look better when painted. Also, the rest of the model looks absolutely terrible... not sure why, think it was just very old and the years have taken it's toll on detail.

I then chucked him into a Warrior squad as their special weapon dude, and retro-fitted these new Blasters all through the units. Unfortunately, I ran out of the Tormentor Grenade Launcher bits that come with the Ravager... so I can't make any more at the moment. But it would have cost me more money for an actual Blaster, than it did for the full squad of 10 guys....

So yeah, there you go. 30 odd Kabalite Warriors, 6 Wyches (probably be Bloodbrides) and 3 Venoms added to my Kabal, and waiting to be sanded and sprayed up for painting.

Cheers,
SB

Festive Projects

Morning all,

So pretty soon, it'll be Xmas and everyone will (hopefully) be getting some time off work and unwrapping lots of hobby goodies that are under the tree. Whilst I was assembling some dwarfs last night, I started thinking about what I'm going to try to get done whilst I'm off work.

1. Brotherhood of the Forge
I've made a fair bit of progress with these, as they've been sat in a box for the last 5 months whilst my Dark Angels and Chaos Daemons were top priority.

So far I've got Arch Confessor Kyrinov made and 6 Crusader Henchmen. Last night I got half way through a 5 man Dominion squad before I called it a night. The thing I loved about these guys first time round was how quick they were to paint. Dark colours, mostly metal armour and minimal amounts of skin on show - meaning that they *should* be quick to get finished so I can get some use out of the army with the WD codex.

I've got the following to assemble, spray and paint:
- 10 Seraphim
- 20 Battle Brothers
- 1 Command Squad
- 1 Saint Celstine
- 1 Immolator

2. Dark Eldar
Next up (not necessarily in priority order...) is a load of Dark Eldar bits I traded some LOTR stuff for at the last Warboot event. I've got 40 old style Kabalite warriors (4 units of 10 warriors, 1 Splinter cannon and Sybarite in each) and 5 metal Wyches to strip down and paint.

What interests me most here, is whether or not my Kabal's Ice Blue armour scheme will look any good on the older models. The new Kabalite warriors armour tends have more defined layers that curve outwards, whereas the older models have more curved inwards, closely layered armour. It'll be interesting to see anyway, and allows me to heavily bulk out my Dark Eldar with more Kabalite warriors, which are one of my favourite units in the book.

I've got the following to strip, spray and paint:
- 40 Kabalite Warriors
- 5 Wyches (to be Hekatrix bloodbrides)
- 3 Venoms

3. Necrons
Here's hoping Father Christmas brings me the Necron stuff I've asked for, if not, I've got 2 boxes of Immortals sat under the tree that I bought at the start of this month. I'm not too sure what to arm my new Immortals with, whether to go the traditional Gauss Blaster route and replace / bulk up my Metal units, or to give Tesla carbines a try.

On top of that, I should have the two released Necron special characters, some Lychguard (not sure whether I'll convert these to Crypteks yet though) and a Ghost Ark. At first, I was really miffed off with the Necron codex, but now I'm interested in how the new units will work and how it'll change the dynamic of an army I've had since I first started 40k.

Also on the topic of Necrons, I've been debating repainting the army or at the very least, washing them. They were done pre-Badab Black days and when I get them out compared to my more recently painted models, they're showing their age. It would also let me add a bit more variety to the other Necron armies I've seen around.

4. Bretonnians
These have been an ongoing project for the last 4 or 5 years and they're still irritating me to this day. I really would like to play more Warhammer Fantasy and get some use out of the army, but I have zero desire to paint them. With a few members of the club expressing more interest in playing Fantasy, maybe it'll give me a kick up the backside

To paint:
- 8 Grail Knights
- 5 Mounted Yeomen
- Grail Reliquae and 20 Battle Pilgrims
- Mounted Damsel
- Damsel on foot
- 3 Pegasus Knights

5. Scenery
Last on the list to do is to deal with some scenery I've bought over the last year from eBay. I think I've got about 20 - 30 trees dumped in a box which are all just loose standing, but after going to Stockport NWGC for a tourney last month, I really liked the way they've done the trees.

Basically it's a kidney shaped piece of hardboard, with 3 60mm (ish) holes cut into it. Take the hole piece you've cut out, glue the tree to that, then glue a piece of stiffened card underneath the hole you've drilled (so you can pick it up as 1 piece) and then spray and paint.

It looked really good and meant you could easily shift the trees if you needed to, as well as meaning trees can be left loose for easy storage and mixed and matched between each base.

The only problem is just the time it takes to do all of that, maybe with some help from a local DIY expert (i.e. My Dad) the job will get done a bit quicker.

So that's it for my plans folks. I highly doubt any of it will get done, but it's worth listing down what you want to aim for...

So, what are you guys planning to get up to hobbywise over the Xmas period?

Badger's Log - Baron Sathonyx (and friend!)

Morning all,

I didn't get chance to put a blog up yesterday, so I'll try and make sure to do one this morning whilst my computer goes through it's update process.

Last blog I did I showed off some more Incubi, at the same time I was painting those, I was trying to get my Dark Eldar collection completely painted (all I have left now are the Raider passengers). The only other things left were my Baron Sathonyx conversion and a lone Hellion, leftover from Beastmaster conversions.

First up, the basic Hellion. I painted them in the same way as Wyches and the beastmasters I'd done before. I really do like all the dynamic poses that you get from the Hellion models as well as the ball joint flying stands allowing you to pose them swooping, soaring or banking.

I'd like to add more Hellions to the army, especially with the Baron allowing them to become Troops, the problem comes in what to remove from the army to fit them in. Either the Haemonculi or the Duke. I'd like to eventually have a big unit of 15, I'd love to see them on the table flying around all over the show.

Lastly, we've got the Baron himself. He was cobbled together from random Hellion bits, some skull trophies along with a Wych knife and a cloak as best I could find. I've also tried to make his arms posed so that the skyboard can be angled down and get a bit closer to the pose from the Codex. It works for now, he's clear to who he is and I look forward to using him in the near future alongside a Hellion squad.

I only originally made him because I bought Hellions to turn into Beastmasters and had 2 spare for conversions.

That's it for now, I'll see if I remember over the weekend to put up pics of my Bretonnian Damsels and see what else I can get done hobbywise over the weekend.

Peace,
SB

Badger's Log - More Incubi

Ello,

Despite the fact I've not got chance to play 40K at the moment, I seem to be doing pretty well in painting things (lack of sleep really helps there!).

So first batch of stuff I'll show off is some more Incubi

Same thing as the last batch with these guys, the only difference being, I spent some more time on the details of the swords. I realised after painting the last batch that the sword runes glow green. It's something I should have bothered doing on the first batch really, as it's made the swords look better. The only other thing to do on the models now, is to re-dot the Eyes with Snot Green so they glow a bit more.

Next up is the Klaivex that I made. I originally cut his Klaive in half, attempting to make a Demi-Klaive, but it didn't really work out, so instead I used a Sybarite Power Sword from a warrior box, and the other hand was a sword from a Dark Elf Corsair. It does the job and makes him stand out from the rest of the unit. I also glued his back trophy racks on the wrong way, meaning instead of pointing out like the others, they point inwards.

I'd originally planned to use him as Drazhar, as part of an Incubi temple army list, but I'm not sure he looks hardcore enough to be some uber blade-master. Shall have to see what I can do.

That's it for today, took me long enough to get this written up... I'll post some more assorted bits through the rest of the week.

Peace,
SB

Upgrading Older / Converted Models?

Morning all,

Had a bit of a productive afternoon on Sunday in terms of painting. I managed to get 6 Incubi, a Hellion and a Baron Sathonyx conversion done, ready for black wash. I also got 2 Bretonnian Damsels almost done, just a few details left to do on them before the wash stage - then base everything.

I had hoped to have some done to share on here, but instead, I'll ramble about what's going on with my Dark Eldar army at the moment.

I've come up with a dilemma at the moment, where I've bought my first Citadel Finecast models (Incubi) and found that a whole world of new minis have opened up to me. The problem being, that I'd originally made all my Haemonculi coven Dark Eldar bits and bobs out of Skaven things. So Plague Monks were Wracks, Haemonculi were Warlocks and Warlords and Grotesques were Rat Ogres.

Now I'm looking at whether it's worth me spending cash to update the models to the actual Finecast models. The Skaven stuff does the job on the battlefield, but they don't look like they match with the other Dark Eldar range that I have.

So it begs the question - should I swap to the Finecast / Newer released equivalents?

My Grotesques are Rat Ogres. No conversions, just painted in a similar method to the Dark Eldar armour and such.I've got 6 of them, along with possibly 2 more from an Island of Blood set that I *could* use. My problem with buying Grotesques in Finecast is the cost and unit size. It's not too bad to buy 3 / 4 of them in a Raider with a Haemonculus, but even still, that's £50 -£60 for a single unit without the transport. I might see about converting these guys out of Ogre Bulls instead and use the Rat Ogres as my Clawed Fiends.

Wracks, I'm much more likely to swap to Finecast with. In my current list, I'm using a unit of 3 in a Venom and simply deploy them in the most LOS obscuring terrain I can, then have them sat there for the game. If I'm only taking the one unit, then I could easily buy a box, then have the bits spare for if the unit needs expanding with another generic Wrack and the options on an Acothyst.

Chances are, these guys will be getting updated to Finecast pretty soon.

Haemonculi are another likely contender for me to go to Finecast. I do like the models and the problem I'm finding at the moment with my current Skaven-culi is they're all the same model, same pose and same weapons, meaning that it's hard to keep track of which is which in terms of shattershard and other upgrades. I could do with having a proper look at the Haemonculi blister pack to see what options there are in terms of weaponry and arcane wargear.

The idea would be that I have one with a Shattershard and a Venom Blade who hops in the Wrack's transport and then zooms off to snipe some characters, and a second one that can go with an Incubi squad to boost them with Feel No Pain - although I'm not sure on upgrades for that fella.

This is my Urien Rat-karth, who's a Skaven Warlord from Island of Blood. Originally I chose him, so that his trophy rack on his back made him stand out, but I ended up cutting it off because it was too Skaven-y and in the way all the time.

Going back to my Haemonculi issue before, I was debating buying the actual Rakarth model (same price as a Haemonculi Finecast) and using him as my variant Haemonculi, so it's obvious which is which.

I don't really want to use him in lists, as to do a proper Haemonculi coven army, it'd cost me a ton and really, that's the only way I can imagine I would use him. Even then, I'd probably rather take 6 basic Haemonculi and assign them out to other squads, giving a guaranteed 6 pain tokens off the bat.

What do you guys think? Do you ever look back at converted models from the past, in a time before the model it represented had existed, or as a cheaper alternative, then think about upgrading them to the newer models?

I'm normally in the camp that thinks "Why spend money on things I technically already own, when I could use that money to buy new stuff which I don't have?" (i.e. Razorwings and Talos) But over the past few weeks, I've been thinking about this, not only for my Dark Eldar, but also my Chaos Daemons.

The aim being, that if I retire the Skaven aspect of my Dark Eldar, I'll bring them back as my Chaos Daemon Nurgle army.

Comments are, as always, welcome. And any ideas you guys have!

Peace,
SB

Post-Monday Thoughts: Dark Eldar

Ello all,

Not much progress on my Incubi last night. By time I'd got in from work, it was more or less straight back out to Football.

So I thought I'd chuck up some thoughts from Monday night. This week at the club, I played against Mike F's Chaos Marines, which was roughly this (correct me if I'm wrong Mike!):
Khorne Lord
9 x Khorne Berserkers
Rhino w/ Havoc Launcher and Daemonic Posession
? x Plague Marines
5 x Havocs (2 Missile, 2 Lascannon)
3 x Nurgle Bikers
? x Nurgle Raptors
2 Individual Obliterators
We played Spearhead and Capture and Control. So yeah. I can't remember the entire game goings-on, but I'll try and summarise into points.

Cover
First up with the deployment type as Spearhead, I had a pretty good chunk of cover to hide the vehicles behind. I could deploy the 3 small venoms behind a large building in the middle, meaning that they weren't going to be shot at first turn. Then I put the Raiders quite far back, ready to move up with the lances.

It meant that with some decent positioning, my Raiders only managed to be shot by a Deep Striking Raptor unit with 2 Melta Guns.

Overwhelming Units
As with the last game, I tried to ensure that each unit I would attack, I'd throw at least 2 units into it. This happened a couple of times, where I had 3 Venoms firing at a biker unit, along with the embarked units that had weaponry, as well as all the Dark Lances firing at the same vehicle, etc.

I'd also aim my assaults to get more than 1 unit into assault, to ensure that I beat the Chaos units.

Poor Rolling
Fortunately (for me, not so much for Mike), I managed to take very few shots on the vehicles. The majority of the first turn of shooting went into shooting the Beastmaster unit, turbo-boosting or popping smoke.

When shots were fired at the vehicles though, the majority of them missed and the 1 or 2 that got through were stopped by cover / Flickerfields. Sorry!

Eventually a deep-striking Raptor unit dropped nearby and Melta'd the Duke's personal Raider.

Guessing Distances
I think I manged to do well with judging my distances to keep out of rapid fire or into cover, then to be able to leap clear and rapid fire in return or assault at long range. This is massively helped when dealing with Fast Skimmers, since I could hunker down behind a building, either out of sight or in cover, then float around over the top.

Pain Tokens
What also helped in this game was that the Duke, for the second week running, managed to help me get a 6 on the Combat Drugs roll. This meant my Wyches started off with a Pain Token, and also meant that the Duke's Warrior Squad had Feel No Pain. These tokens in the end proved really vital, as the Wyches needed them in order to not lose a combat and the Warriors needed it, otherwise they'd have probably been wiped out in the explosion of the vehicle.

I think my two major assault units - Beastmasters and Incubi - managed to wrack up pain tokens, meaning they weren't running away, and in the case of the Incubi, could hack through Plague Marines that bit easier.

Poisoned Weapons
One of Mike's biggest advantages against other armies - The Mark of Nurgle - was negated almost completely during out game, thanks to Poisoned Weapons. Eventually it caught up with me, needing 5s to wound the Plague Marines in close combat, but from shooting (and some poor armour saves) I managed to plough through most Nurgle stuff thanks to Poisoned.

Shattershard
Again, the Shattershard claimed a fresh HQ victim. This time it was a Chaos Lord with the Mark of Khorne and Lightning Claws. This week, I put the Shattershard Haemonculus in with the Incubi so that he could hopefully shift some numbers out of bigger units, for the Incubi to assault. I think he also took down 2 or 3 Khorne Berserkers with him.

So that's it for this week. It's likely going to be my last game for a few weeks now, so I'll see what I can get done painting-wise in the mean time and maybe start my army focus that I did with the Orks, this time for Dark Eldar. Basically just going through what I think of each unit and what I do / intend to use them for.

Peace,
SB
