Friendly List??

Mr One here. Right I'm not usually a blogger. Face to Face is how I roll. We have an Inter Club Championship on Sunday and as a result I have been dragged kicking and screaming out of my semi retired state.

When I was first approached I was told that this was a friendly tournament no net lists or spamming etc. A meeting of fellow gamers with a few games thrown in.

But after seeing some lists its seem to be less about friendly lists and instead about how far can people push the friendly boundary before it's called spamming or a beardy list. If something is Codex legal should it be allowed after all its a war game and army's never play friendly when at war or can they be any such as a friendly game.

At MAWS we used to seem to have a nice balance of friendly and spam within our Meta as if anyone really spammed out then they would start to lose opponents. Though as you can see via the recent blog posts the beard emerges.

So what do people think are friendly competitions possible are is everyone an ard boyz wanting to disperse pain and retribution to fellow gamers.

Now Rant over:

List for Sunday a Standard Vanilla Marine Half Company List (no Spam):

Cpt Sicarius

Chaplain Bob (jump pack Chaplin with melta bombs) - Thought Cassius was a step too far for a friendly tourney.

10 Man Assault Squad with 2 plasma pistols and power fist.
10 Man Devestator Squad with 2 Missile Launchers and 2 Heavy Bolter- Thought 4 missile launchers was spamming out.

10 Man Tactical with Missile Launcher & Flamer. Sgt with CCW and BP in Rhino.
10 Man Tactical with Melta Gun and Multi Melta with Sgt with PF in Rhino.
10 Man Tactical with Plasma Gun and Plasma Cannon Sgt with CCW & BP in Rhino.

Predator with TL Lascannon and HB sponsons.

So I will head to the competition with my head held high safe in the fact I have taken a balanced friendly all comers list. I have a feeling I will either scape a draw but will more likely come away with 3 defeats but we shall see. So Mr One signing off.

  1. What are you trying to say about my completely friendly unspammed team list.

You have a point about pushing the friendly theme to the limit. maybe you should only be allowed 1 HQ or no more than 1 named character to tone things down.

Sunday will be interesting, we'll be all be able to compare notes on the different armies we face and how they were used.

if all else fails i can always gas them after the pre-tourny McFatties.

  3. again a very good point, the nature of the tabletop game is war and there can be only one (in my best christopher lambert voice). i think the term friendly is more about if you enjoyed yourself if you win, lose or draw. If you really didnt enjoy yourself, either because of the list you are facing or your opponant then its classed as unfriendly, after all its a hobby to play against other people, if your not fun to play against then why would people play you!!!

does this mean because i read this I AM THE RESISTANCE?

IT A TORNEY SO YOU HAVE NO CONTROL ON SELECTING YOUR OPPONENT LIKE A CLUB NIGHT SO THE PICKING ETC IS TAKEN OUT OF YOUR HANDS.

  5. If I'd have known it was an 'unfriendly' tournament I'd have taken Mephiston, a standard librarian & sanguinary priests.

  9. Just read the lists.... Glad I'm not going to the "friendly" tournament.

How many Guard lists are there? I thought I was just reading one big one... turns out it was about 4 individual ones.

I do like the proper Khorne Daemon list though. Respect to that man!

  10. 4 guard lists so far, there may be more

  11. I have to get beardy for tournaments, otherwise I come last!!! But I counter the beard by usually taking a rediculously small army (20 models this weekend). I also have my friendly chaos Night Lords, and my in progress 8 dread list.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Think I'll pass playing 8 dreads thanks

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why? It's a pretty hit and miss idea, depends on both players dice rolls. As long as everyone is willing to have a laugh and joke it's all good unless the list is overly beardy and you don't even stand a chance.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Right then what can I say unless you tailor a list to play 8 dreads you are going to struggle same with leaf blower guard. But Colonel how can 8 dreads not be spam list i don't know?? Again I know its codex legal but is it morally justified if you can find a regular variety of opponents then good luck to you after gaming is a mutal contract between two people to have a good time. I for one wouldn't like to play it

Tourneys are supposed to be all comers lists some net lists can be used like the great big red win button and with the nature of the codexes older codex will always struggle against new ones. Like I said seeing some of lists I would have gone for a calgar terminator list with Land Raider or 20 honour guard with calgar and Null zone libby but my moral compass said no!!

It's good to see a debate raging though.

  15. i'll refer you back to a previous comment, if you both enjoy the game then its the taking part that counts BUT playing against some lists e.g. leaf blower of psyfleman dread / razorback MSU spam is boring, you know straight away that unles syou have another 'net list' to counter that specific list then you will get beat. I've played against (no names mentioned no 1 uk ranked) when he used his 'optimised' leaf blower list and i was bored out of my skull, i did not enjoy that game at all and the guy was a tool - NOT ENJOYABLE. Ive also played against a leaf blower list but had a great game, the opponant was a good guy top play, we had a laugh. both games i used the same nid list. I got beat in the 2nd game an although it was a 'net list' i enjoyed the game. people used optimised lists at tournaments because its 'codex legal' the thing that makes it wrong is when everyone else copies it because it works well. that takes the fun and the skill out the game. I for one would play the 8 dread list just so i can find a way of beating it but thats just me. once id beaten it i prob wouldnt play it again. i like games that are a bit of a challenge but not internetty, to be a challenge is both the list and the person playing the list, you can have a leaf blower army but not know how to use it on the reverse a 'standard' list with a very skilled opponant can be very challenging.

  16. To counter it i may as well vendetta spam with veteran squads all with meltas, or thunder hammer/storm shield marine spam, or blood angel spam 5 man assault squads without jump packs in las razorbacks or eldar fire dragon spam in wave. Serpents or dark eldar raider & venom spam or etc etc ......... 2 wrongs don't make a right ;-p

  17. Why are typical netlists boring for exactly? You also don't need a specific list to beat any typical cookie cutter lists. You just need to be a good player and factor in dice rolls. My jumper Angels got beat by a pretty poor CSM list, which was down to dice rolls.

It all depends who you play, as you said you played a guy with a leaf blower list and he as a tool. You played another guy who had leaf blower and had a laugh. It's not the list which is 'boring' it's more dependent on your opponent.

There's also nothing wrong with copying either, that's the form of flattery ;) though people do copy other lists because they are cool etc, but that doesn't mean they will win. A certain degree of skill is needed. This one guy who runs a mech Guard list and tough Wolf list isn't the best player and came second at a recent tournament, yet he had top lists.

  18. its the sheer amount of copying that goes on, and the type of builds that are copied, flattering someone is fine but when 10, 20, 100+ people do it and you play aginst the same lists at tournaments (fielded by differant people) it can get monotonous. i know i seem to be contrdicting myself but even if you have a laugh playing the game the fact its another net list can be a big put off. look at the the top players in the UK at the moment (according the tournament rankings site) its a variation on a few net list builds. dont get me wrong, these are the people who have probably come up with the build in the first place and a lot of thought and practise went into the original list and to master the list against differant opponents and lists takes skill but when everyone else copies the list and goes on to beat people and win tournaments it takes a lot of the fun out of the game and isnt nice to play against.

  19. just to add to this if I can.

The lists entered in the tournament were all told that the Spam lists and Net lists (guard leaf blower etc) would not be allowed which is why they have been filtered. Just as a point of note each club in the tournament had 1 list sent back to them and a resubmission requested. Most of the lists at the tournament are a fair distance away from the standard Net lists which I for one are grateful for. However the tournament rules could do with refining which hopefully the next club to host will do (possibly MAWS???). At the end of the day it should be 3 friendly games with nobody taking it too serious, although my son has claimed the trophy as his and wants it back Sunday night (No pressure on me then).

As i pointed out there will be a few teething problems with the tournament format but hopefully we can keep all clubs interested and improve on the rules as we go along. Each club is allowed to change the rules/points costs to whatever they like when they host it as long as they keep it with the original idea of a friendly tournament.

By the way it is Stuart from Northern Warlords

  20. Hi Stuart,

welcome to the debate, it'll be good to get this first tournament out of the way and then get peoples feedback and see how well it went. We'll gladly host the 2nd event - any clues as to what the trophy is yet? we only got snippits of information from you regarding it

    ReplyDelete
  21. Like I said we shall see and the proof is in the pudding so roll on Sunday...

    ReplyDelete
  22. No clues on the trophy. Only 1 or 2 if our club members have seen it (that was by accident). It should last for years of friendly tournaments and hopefully we can keep thus going long enough that it will need replacing.

Hope me and my 1 trick pony list we be enough for us to keep it although I doubt it. I haven't had chance to put the other lists up yet but may try and get it done tomorrow. We have 2 lists changing due to model availability and a last minute player change from lost boys.

Just a heads up the chippy near us isn't open but the shop will be and Matt is on about doing a Mc d's run as well.
