Death Match

Hi all,

Angryman here, I played a 2K game last night against a Space Marine army using my Tyranids.  It was annihilation and pitched battle. We ended the game at the end of turn 4 as it was getting quite late.  It ended up being 11 - 8 kill points to my Tyraninds but if the game had gone on longer it could have swung to a draw or a win for the Space Marines.  It was a really enjoyable game with a lot of carnarge on both sides

My question is this, is there a particular army you love or hate playing against
For me the army I dread playing against is the 'leaf blower' Imperial Guard army.  I lose everytime I play this army.  The army I really enjoy playing against is Orks, especially with my Tyranids, its the unstoppable force against an immovable object.

I enjoy pitting my Eldar against Dark Eldar (even though I keep getting beat) and I alway struggle against Sisters of Battle.

So how about you guys, who do you hate, who do you love?

Motivation

I just wanted to leave a quick question before going on holiday (in 10 minutes!!!).

How do you get motivated to build/paint/play?

I find it very hard to get motivated to paint, but I have found that my motivation lies in books. When I read a good book I get inspired to recreate the army or characters that took part. Recently I bought a mounted Empire army after reading the Legend of Sigmar trilogy. I have a model to represent Sigmar who will either be Emperor Karl Franz with Ghal-Maraz, or in smaller games a Templar Grand Master with the Hammer of Judgement. I also have a Standard Bearer which will be Pendrag who was Sigmars closest friend and was identifiable with having a silver Dwarf made hand. Lastly I have my Warrior Priest of Sigmar (Ulric in this army) who is Sigmars Sword-Brother Wolfgart, this guy carried a giant sword (counts as Great Hammer).

I have many other armies inspired by a good book, but that is what I am working on at the moment.

So, to repeat my original question, what gets you motivated in this hobby?

Badger's Log - Bretonnian Damsel

Morning all,

Very brief one off me today, I've been snowed under with work. I've had lots of things I could put up on the blog, just no time whatsoever to get it done!

So first up is my Bretonnian Damsels I painted up last weekend (or the weekend before... I've lost track of the days with work). There's 1 mounted and 1 on foot. Ideally, I could do with a 2nd mounted Damsel to keep up with the rest of the cavalry and also to add some oomph if I were to play Storm of Magic.

I painted them in a light blue scheme, with white trim and detailing, similar to my Bretonnian Lords. Once I'd finished them, I decided they needed a Black Wash just to tie the colours in and give a bit of shading. I'm kind of regretting that now, as it means I'll need to eventually black wash the rest of the army.

The one on foot, I'm pretty happy with. The horse I'm also quite impressed how the black wash turned out on a grey horse, however I put way too much wash on the mounted Damsel. But oh well... they only ever get out onto the table every so often, so they'll do.

Peace,

Super heavies and Apocolypse

Hi all,

Angryman here, I've recently purchased a Shadowsword on the cheap for use in any Apocalypse games we play
I wanted to add this to my Baneblade
and Terminus Ultra
so I and the other club members can use these models along side their armies.  This got me thinking, how many people actually play Apocalypse and do you use any of the superheavies on offer?

Suicide Badger scratch built an Ork Stompa out of a Mr Potatoe head and converted an Ork Squiggoth.  Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of them to show you (Badger, help us out!!!) but these are some of the best scratch built models I have ever seen.

If you don't use the superheavy vehicles do you use any of the apocalyptic formations, if so, how have they effected your gaming?

On a few occasions when we have played apocalypse we have taken as much stuff as we could fit on the board (within the points limit) and left out all the superheavies and formations, this meant we could take more stuff but the games carried on longer than we thought.  The battles always looked very impressive as we'd have 10,000+ points on the table.

When we have used superheavies, for example the first game my Baneblade was used, we make it a point of shooting the shit out of them until they blow up extremely satisfactorily (yes Sanguinius I mean you).

So do you play Apocalypse and if so do you use superheavies and/or formations?

I can't wait to paint up my new Scythed Heirodule and have it join the ranks of Hive Fleet Tattybojangles

Badger's Log - Baron Sathonyx (and friend!)

Morning all,

I didn't get chance to put a blog up yesterday, so I'll try and make sure to do one this morning whilst my computer goes through it's update process.

Last blog I did I showed off some more Incubi, at the same time I was painting those, I was trying to get my Dark Eldar collection completely painted (all I have left now are the Raider passengers). The only other things left were my Baron Sathonyx conversion and a lone Hellion, leftover from Beastmaster conversions.

First up, the basic Hellion. I painted them in the same way as Wyches and the beastmasters I'd done before. I really do like all the dynamic poses that you get from the Hellion models as well as the ball joint flying stands allowing you to pose them swooping, soaring or banking.

I'd like to add more Hellions to the army, especially with the Baron allowing them to become Troops, the problem comes in what to remove from the army to fit them in. Either the Haemonculi or the Duke. I'd like to eventually have a big unit of 15, I'd love to see them on the table flying around all over the show.

Lastly, we've got the Baron himself. He was cobbled together from random Hellion bits, some skull trophies along with a Wych knife and a cloak as best I could find. I've also tried to make his arms posed so that the skyboard can be angled down and get a bit closer to the pose from the Codex. It works for now, he's clear to who he is and I look forward to using him in the near future alongside a Hellion squad.

I only originally made him because I bought Hellions to turn into Beastmasters and had 2 spare for conversions.

That's it for now, I'll see if I remember over the weekend to put up pics of my Bretonnian Damsels and see what else I can get done hobbywise over the weekend.

Peace,

Badger's Log - More Incubi

Ello,

Despite the fact I've not got chance to play 40K at the moment, I seem to be doing pretty well in painting things (lack of sleep really helps there!).

So first batch of stuff I'll show off is some more Incubi

Same thing as the last batch with these guys, the only difference being, I spent some more time on the details of the swords. I realised after painting the last batch that the sword runes glow green. It's something I should have bothered doing on the first batch really, as it's made the swords look better. The only other thing to do on the models now, is to re-dot the Eyes with Snot Green so they glow a bit more.

Next up is the Klaivex that I made. I originally cut his Klaive in half, attempting to make a Demi-Klaive, but it didn't really work out, so instead I used a Sybarite Power Sword from a warrior box, and the other hand was a sword from a Dark Elf Corsair. It does the job and makes him stand out from the rest of the unit. I also glued his back trophy racks on the wrong way, meaning instead of pointing out like the others, they point inwards.

I'd originally planned to use him as Drazhar, as part of an Incubi temple army list, but I'm not sure he looks hardcore enough to be some uber blade-master. Shall have to see what I can do.

That's it for today, took me long enough to get this written up... I'll post some more assorted bits through the rest of the week.

Peace,

Upgrading Older / Converted Models?

Morning all,

Had a bit of a productive afternoon on Sunday in terms of painting. I managed to get 6 Incubi, a Hellion and a Baron Sathonyx conversion done, ready for black wash. I also got 2 Bretonnian Damsels almost done, just a few details left to do on them before the wash stage - then base everything.

I had hoped to have some done to share on here, but instead, I'll ramble about what's going on with my Dark Eldar army at the moment.

I've come up with a dilemma at the moment, where I've bought my first Citadel Finecast models (Incubi) and found that a whole world of new minis have opened up to me. The problem being, that I'd originally made all my Haemonculi coven Dark Eldar bits and bobs out of Skaven things. So Plague Monks were Wracks, Haemonculi were Warlocks and Warlords and Grotesques were Rat Ogres.

Now I'm looking at whether it's worth me spending cash to update the models to the actual Finecast models. The Skaven stuff does the job on the battlefield, but they don't look like they match with the other Dark Eldar range that I have.

So it begs the question - should I swap to the Finecast / Newer released equivalents?

My Grotesques are Rat Ogres. No conversions, just painted in a similar method to the Dark Eldar armour and such.I've got 6 of them, along with possibly 2 more from an Island of Blood set that I *could* use. My problem with buying Grotesques in Finecast is the cost and unit size. It's not too bad to buy 3 / 4 of them in a Raider with a Haemonculus, but even still, that's £50 -£60 for a single unit without the transport. I might see about converting these guys out of Ogre Bulls instead and use the Rat Ogres as my Clawed Fiends.

Wracks, I'm much more likely to swap to Finecast with. In my current list, I'm using a unit of 3 in a Venom and simply deploy them in the most LOS obscuring terrain I can, then have them sat there for the game. If I'm only taking the one unit, then I could easily buy a box, then have the bits spare for if the unit needs expanding with another generic Wrack and the options on an Acothyst.

Chances are, these guys will be getting updated to Finecast pretty soon.

Haemonculi are another likely contender for me to go to Finecast. I do like the models and the problem I'm finding at the moment with my current Skaven-culi is they're all the same model, same pose and same weapons, meaning that it's hard to keep track of which is which in terms of shattershard and other upgrades. I could do with having a proper look at the Haemonculi blister pack to see what options there are in terms of weaponry and arcane wargear.

The idea would be that I have one with a Shattershard and a Venom Blade who hops in the Wrack's transport and then zooms off to snipe some characters, and a second one that can go with an Incubi squad to boost them with Feel No Pain - although I'm not sure on upgrades for that fella.

This is my Urien Rat-karth, who's a Skaven Warlord from Island of Blood. Originally I chose him, so that his trophy rack on his back made him stand out, but I ended up cutting it off because it was too Skaven-y and in the way all the time.

Going back to my Haemonculi issue before, I was debating buying the actual Rakarth model (same price as a Haemonculi Finecast) and using him as my variant Haemonculi, so it's obvious which is which.

I don't really want to use him in lists, as to do a proper Haemonculi coven army, it'd cost me a ton and really, that's the only way I can imagine I would use him. Even then, I'd probably rather take 6 basic Haemonculi and assign them out to other squads, giving a guaranteed 6 pain tokens off the bat.

What do you guys think? Do you ever look back at converted models from the past, in a time before the model it represented had existed, or as a cheaper alternative, then think about upgrading them to the newer models?

I'm normally in the camp that thinks "Why spend money on things I technically already own, when I could use that money to buy new stuff which I don't have?" (i.e. Razorwings and Talos) But over the past few weeks, I've been thinking about this, not only for my Dark Eldar, but also my Chaos Daemons.

The aim being, that if I retire the Skaven aspect of my Dark Eldar, I'll bring them back as my Chaos Daemon Nurgle army.

Comments are, as always, welcome. And any ideas you guys have!

Peace,
SB

Terrain

Hi all,

Angryman here.  Recently I've not been buying models or painting them (I really should, I've got more unpainted than painted), I've been buying and trying to make terrain and scenery for my little plastic men with swords to play in.

I'm a big fan of the Games Workshop scenery and terrain pieces.  I've got quite a large collection but I've been wanting to do differant types of terrain rather than the old ruined buildings and hills that dominate most battlefields.

The Orks we're keeping watch as the local gypo's had nicked the lead and copper pipes from their battlewagon
What I was wanted to make was some really eye catching, differant, awe inspiring terrain but what I ended up with was the crashed Aquila Lander stuck to plywood and sand glued onto it

I hang my head in shame
I did a search online for some inspiration and found some fantastic boards and terrain pieces

I had hoped to use those images as a template for my own terrain pieces, I got some modelling supplies, set up an area on my diningroom table and told my wife to leave me alone for the rest of the day, 30 mins later all I had was a big pile of sh*t

I've come to the conclusion that I need to invest in a well known book

I should get the 'for dummies' version
Well thats what I've been upto recently, how about you lot, are you any good at making terrain or painting it or both?
